Masters of the Universe Box Office Target: Will He-Man Topple Superman’s $618M Record?

Gear up! Travis Knight’s live-action spectacle, Masters of the Universe, is charging into cinemas on June 5, 2026. With Nicholas Galitzine donning the iconic sword, the film hopes to revive Mattel’s beloved fantasy saga and even outshine James Gunn’s 2025 blockbuster Superman at the global box office.

Masters of the Universe Storyline

Masters of the Universe follows Prince Adam, who transforms into the powerful warrior He-Man to protect the magical world of Eternia. In the new trailer, Nicholas Galitzine’s version of He-Man appears trapped in a very different setting — modern corporate America — before being pulled back into a larger battle tied to his true identity and destiny.

The story blends fantasy, action, and adventure as He-Man faces powerful enemies, including the iconic villain Skeletor, while discovering his role as the defender of Eternia.

Breaking Even: The $425M Milestone

Made on an estimated $170 million budget, Masters of the Universe has to cross roughly $425 million just to break even (using the industry’s 2.5× rule). That means the real race isn’t merely beating the 1987 Dolph Lundgren original’s modest $17.3 million haul – it’s about securing healthy opening weekends, strong word-of-mouth, and steady overseas numbers.

The Superhero Showdown: Can He-Man Overtake Superman?

James Gunn’s Superman flew past $618.7 million worldwide last year, splitting $354.2 million at home and $264.5 million internationally. For He-Man to dethrone the Man of Steel, he needs to eclipse those figures – a tall order given that fewer than ten films crossed the $600 million mark in 2025. Only three titles in 2026 have so far cracked that barrier.

That means Masters of the Universe must deliver a blockbuster opening and sustain momentum for at least three to four weeks. With global markets still hungry for original superhero tales, there’s a fighting chance – but the stakes have never been higher.

What to Expect from Masters of the Universe

Set fifteen years after Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) left Eternia, the story sees him return to find his homeland enslaved by the evil Skeletor (Jared Leto). Teaming up with Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), Adam transforms into He-Man to liberate his people and reclaim the power sword.

With its OTT-level VFX, a star-studded cast, and a nostalgic core, Masters of the Universe could spark the next big global franchise. And if He-Man truly challenges Superman’s reign, it will be a cinematic moment worth celebrating—no matter which universe you hail from!
