Mortal Kombat II Shatters Rivals: North America Box Office Soars Past Tron: Ares

Spread the love

After its May 8 release, Mortal Kombat II has emerged as the undisputed champion of fighting-game adaptations, racking up impressive numbers in North America. Karl Urban’s latest action-packed instalment is not just entertaining fans; it’s also outperforming big-budget blockbusters in record time.

Impressive North American Performance

In only 18 days, Mortal Kombat II has hauled in a stunning $74.2 million domestically, setting a new benchmark for video game movies. Its third Monday saw a remarkable $1.6 million gross—an unprecedented 32.7% increase over the previous Monday, despite dropping out of 808 screens on Friday. These figures underline the film’s robust word-of-mouth and a loyal fanbase that keeps the theaters buzzing.

Outpacing 2025’s Major Releases

One of the most eye-catching feats is how quickly Mortal Kombat II overtook Jared Leto’s Tron: Ares. The sci-fi sequel, backed by massive budgets and star power like Leto and Jeff Bridges, limped to just $73.1 million in North American ticket sales—taking 56 days to hit that mark. Mortal Kombat II smashed through that milestone in less than three weeks.

Industry trackers project the Karl Urban starrer will end its domestic run between $80 million and $90 million, potentially eclipsing Margot Robbie’s romantic drama Wuthering Heights, which peaked at $84 million. If these forecasts hold true, Mortal Kombat II will hold the crown for the highest-grossing fighting game adaptation in North America.

Global Totals and Record-Busting Run

On the international front, the film has already taken in $45.9 million, bringing the worldwide tally to an impressive $120.1 million. While it’s unlikely to breach the $200 million global barrier, it’s still set to become the top-grossing fighting game movie ever on the planet.

With adrenaline-fueled fight scenes and Karl Urban’s magnetic screen presence, Mortal Kombat II continues to dominate the box office. As it chases that coveted $100 million domestic finish line, it’s clear that this sequel has delivered a knockout punch to its competitors.
